WIAW #9: San Francisco Edition!

My What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) travel series continues!  For all you travel lovers who may have missed it, here are my eats from a recent trip to Portland (Oregon, not Maine).  Today I am sharing my eats from this past weekend's trip to San Francisco.

What made this weekend extra special is that we were toddler-free!  My sister and brother offered to watch our little boy and we were quick to take them up on that offer!  Exploring San Francisco without kids is like being a kid in the candy store.  So much to do and so many great places to eat.  Where do I start?

Saturday Morning: Embarcadero!

Saturday morning.  8am.  Sunny weather?  Check.  Beautiful scenery?  Check.  Good eats?  You bet!

One of my favorite places to go when I am in San Francisco is the Ferry Building.  Extra bonus if its a Saturday, Tuesday, or Thursday, because those are the days there is a farmer's market.  When I woke up Saturday morning and looked out the hotel window and saw that the rain from the previous Friday had melted away to a beautiful gorgeous sunny Saturday, I grabbed my camera, some money, and threw on my walking gear and off I went!

The Kindness of Strangers

Yesterday was a travel day!  My son and I packed ourselves off to the Denver International Airport and headed west to California.

Thank goodness for strangers.  I don't think I really cared much before I became a mother, but now that I travel alot with my toddler, I love that I can always count on the generosity and assistance of people I don't know to help my son and I when we are traveling.  Whether it getting from long term parking to the airport or on the plane, I am always amazed at the goodness of people.

WIAW #8: Nutritional Reset

I'm sure for some of you, with Easter just behind us, a photo of a hard-boiled egg is the last thing you want to look at right now.  But I have to assure you, this hard-boiled egg is no ordinary hard-boiled egg.  It's got deliciousness on top of it.  But more about that later.

I'm linking up again with Jenn at Peas and Crayons for one of the biggest link-up parties I know!  And I'm mixing it up again!  Let's just look at my last couple of What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) posts:
Are you noticing a trend?  Paleo, paleo, paleo...

Paleo Love

How much do I love the Paleo way of eating?  Let me count the ways...

1. I've learned to love eating vegetables.  Finally.

2. I no longer get hungry between breakfast and dinner.

3. I still get hungry around 4pm every day.  I'm working on that.

4. Raw almonds and almond butter.  'Nuff said.

Weekly Recap & Meal Planning (April 20-26)

Ahhhh, Sunday!  What will you be doing this lovely Easter Sunday?

We're planning to keep it simple and relaxing.  A little breakfast at home and then maybe an outing somewhere... we're thinking a bike ride, but we'll see if we even make it that far.

The past week has been a good week; workouts started out strong and my funk with cooking seems to be on the mend (see pictures above which include some of the meals we made at home).  But by midweek, my progress with my running (I'm trying to increase my mileage) stalled a bit.  I was feeling a bit sluggish on Thursday and not up for running at all, so I decided to go for a good long walk and took Friday as a rest day.  Every day is a new beginning!

Simple Sweet Kale Salad with Cranberries & Almonds

Big Sky in Colorado.  April 17, 2014.

Yay, it's Friday!  We are in for some awesome weather here in Colorado.  The weatherman says it's going to be 75 today (woot!) and stay around the 70s most of the weekend.  It's even supposed to get up to 77 next Tuesday (insert happy dance here).  I couldn't ask for better weather for Easter weekend.  I think we'll be hunting for some eggs!

I'm doubly happy because my husband came home last night after three consecutive weeks of being on the road (he was home for the weekends).  When he's out of town, it's me, me, and me taking care of little K.  Fortunately, K's an angel most of the time...

WIAW #7: More Paleo Eats

I'm linking up once again with Jenn at Peas and Crayons to share my eats!  This week, I'm going to share what I ate on Sunday.  I've been in a little funk with cooking... I haven't been in the mood to cook, which is awful because I don't really see eating out as a better option.  Don't get me wrong, I love eating out now and again, but it's really hard to eat healthy and eat Paleo if you have to dine out all the time.

So last Saturday afternoon, I told myself to sit down and plan three square meals for Sunday.  Just plan meals for one day, I promised myself.  Besides, a snowstorm was predicted to descend upon Denver on Sunday and I didn't want to be making any runs off to the grocery store unless absolutely necessary.

Small Running Victories

I've been working on my running for about a month now.  It's funny to think that a mere two months ago I had proclaimed to the world that walking was my new fitness of choice.  Guess that didn't last long!

Week-to-Week Run Progress
March 16-22: ran 5 miles, walked 12 miles
March 23-29: ran 9 miles, walked 5 miles
March 30-April 5: ran 14 miles, walked 8 miles
April 6-12: ran 12.5 miles, walked 7.75 miles

To celebrate one month of running, here are my small running victories:

Friday Fabulousness

Friday is here!  Yes!  I woke up this morning in a super good mood.  Maybe it's because the weekend is here.  But maybe it's because of so much more, like...

I got a good night's sleep.  I haven't been sleeping well the last couple of nights because I've been staying up waaaaay too late.  So last night I resolved to get in bed early.  The result?  Eight full hours of sleep!!!  (image below thanks to my Fitbit!)

It's a beautiful day today!  The weather has been amazing for the last three days: low 70s with lots of sunshine.  It's been a big help with my running!  I am trying to squeeze in as much outside time before the supposed cold weather coming on Sunday.

Throwback Thursday

It's Throwback Thursday!  I love seeing all the TBT posts on Instagram, and I thought it would be fun to look back at where I've been the last few years...time sure does fly when you're a mama!

This year (aka yesterday).  My husband's out of town this week for business, so it's just me and my little guy.  We went for a coffee date yesterday morning because I was sick of our usual routine of breakfast at home.  Our nearest coffee shop is always full of people headed to work, so it makes for a fun place to sit and people watch.  Photo taken 4/9/2014.

WIAW #6: Not So Paleo

It's time to link up with the weekly What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) celebration at Peas and Crayons.  As our lovely hostess, Jenn explains: "WIAW is about food and fun!  It's about making new friends, breaking out of a food rut, noting changes in your diet/lifestyle, inspiring yourself & others, embracing fruit & vegetables, nourishing your body with the foods that work for you, finding new ways to eat your favorite foods, and so. much. more."

At my last WIAW post, I talked about how I've been doing with six weeks into my new Paleo way of eating.  I'm now in my eighth week, and I've decided I'd like to try and reintroduce some non-Paleo foods to see how my body does.

Treat Yourself Tuesday #5

I'm linking up with Becky at Olives n Wine for another Treat Yourself Tuesday!  If you're not familiar with what Treat Yourself Tuesday is all about, you can read about it here.  As I mentioned yesterday, last week was such a fabulous week, and I didn't even get to share all the ways I peppered treats on top of all the fun activities and events that took place last week.

A Fabulous Week

View of City Park from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science

I love it when I have a fabulous week, and last week was a winner!  It snowed Wednesday night, and it was so beautiful the next morning!  I continued to increase my running mileage: I ran a total of 14 miles last week, despite some challenges with getting out the door on certain days.  I've even got my sights set on a race now!

Getting the Weekend Started

Linger and Little Man Ice Cream in Downtown Denver

This weekend, my mother in law is in town, visiting from North Carolina.  She's here for the weekend, which started on Thursday (yay!).

Today we took my son to the Denver Children's Museum.  It was surprisingly crowded, but it was still a great morning.  My son and my mother in law had lots of chances to play, and I got to just sit back and watch them.

Have a great weekend!  Remember to spend some time playing like a kid...

My Running Story

Every runner started as a walker.

Lindsey from One Mother Of A Day recently shared her Running Story.  It inspired me to share mine.  I'm currently trying to get back into running, and during my runs, my mind will drift back over the last fourteen years that I've been running in some form or fashion.  I recently dug out old running memorabilia, including bibs and hardware, to help put this little story together.

Blame Hawaii!
My high school didn't have a track team, so I didn't think of running as a sport when I was younger.  Outside of the marathon event in the Olympics, I didn't think of running as something people did for fun.  A year out of college, I had an opportunity to move to Hawaii.  While living there, I noticed people were active.  Young or old, small or big, everyone was doing something: swimming, surfing, cycling, walking, or running.
